And they weren’t just talking about the lottery: they also panned bingo games and other forms of gambling, as well as arguing that the numbers themselves were morally unsound.

By the 1800s, such concerns had begun to turn the tide against state-sanctioned gambling. Corruption and other ills of the time—like Denmark Vesey’s use of his winning lottery ticket to finance his planned slave rebellion—further turned off many potential voters, who saw gambling as a corrupt system that preyed on the poor.

In response, legalization advocates shifted their strategy. Instead of promoting the lottery as a budgetary silver bullet, they began to claim that it would cover a specific line item—invariably education but sometimes other services like elder care or public parks. This approach, backed by research, made it easier to convince voters that a vote for the lottery wasn’t just a vote against gambling but for something worthwhile.

In today’s world, the lottery is one of the most popular ways to win big money. But while it’s tempting to spend all that money on new cars, houses, vacations and other luxuries, it’s important for lottery winners to remain financially sound and to build up a team of advisors to help them manage their windfall. After all, plenty of past winners have served as cautionary tales about the psychological impact of sudden wealth and all of its changes.
